I have had the pleasure to be lectured by Bev Allen for the Sage Pastel module AIN2601 in my second year of my UNISA undergraduate degree 4 years ago. The module involved creating a company with all the appropriate processes, ending with a Microsoft Excel component. The module involved several multiple-choice assignments as well as one truly massive and complex assignment: create a company in its entirety. The process of setting up the company involved inputting basic information to the more complicated process of creating the actual accounting system, documents, schedules, discounts etc. It was a simulated company that operated for a full financial year.

A bonus that was granted to students who took the above-mentioned module was the free, optional Sage Pastel certified assessment (nothing to do with UNISA) that students could complete to earn official certification. I passed with flying colors above the high pass requirement of 70%/75%. Had I attempted the module doing self-study without Ms Allen’s valuable teachings, I would not have passed and earned myself the certification.

In addition to Sage Pastel skills, I learned invaluable Microsoft Excel skills, particularly in formulas and formatting of worksheets. Because of her lectures, I remember and use these skills often both in my professional and private lives.

The time I spent learning under Ms. Allen was approximately 4 months (a semester) over the course of one nightly session of 3 hours every week. She made herself readily available out of lecture sessions for any help I needed with the course work, a courtesy not commonly offered by most lecturers. I really appreciated the effort and dedication Ms. Allen put in. Ms. Allen’s website for her business, X-Quiz-!T (http://www.pasteltrainer.co.za) is easy to follow and her responses to queries are easy to follow. When there are a multi-query conversation, all responses are well thought out and easy to follow.
