Study Unit 4 / 5: Exam – Operators

ORDER OF OPERATOR

WHEN IT COMES TO READING AND CALCULATING FORMULA RESULTS, FIGURING OUT THE ORDER OF OPERATIONS FOR DECIDING WHICH CALCULATIONS TO PERFORM FIRST BECOMES A CHALLENGE.

WHEN THERE'S MORE THAN ONE CALCULATION IN A FORMULA, EXCEL EVALUATES COMPLEX FORMULAS PIECE-BY-PIECE IN THIS ORDER:

BEDMAS

STEP 1 - PARENTHESES BRACKET - BRACKETS FIRST ALWAYS!
STEP 2 - PERCENT
STEP 3 - EXPONENTS
STEP 4 - DIVISION AND MULTIPLICATION
STEP 5 - ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION
STEP 6 - & CONNECTS 2 STRINGS OF TEXT TOGETHER
STEP 7 - = <> <= >= COMPARISONS

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING FORMULA:

=5 + 2 * 8 - 1

ALWAYS MULTIPLICATION BEFORE ADDITION (2x8=16):

=5 + 16 - 1

AND THEN THE ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION:

=20

OPERATION - ADDITION

ADDS 10 TO THE VALUE IN CELL A1
ADDS THE VALUE IN CELLS A2, B2 AND C2

OPERATION - SUBTRACTION

SUBTRACTS 10 TO THE VALUE IN CELL A1
SUBTRACTS THE VALUE IN CELLS A2, B2 AND C2

OPERATION - MULTIPLICATION

MULTIPLIES THE VALUES IN CELLS A1 AND B1
MULTIPLIES THE VALUE IN CELL A2 BY 0.06

OPERATION – DIVISION

DIVIDES THE VALUE IN CELL A1 BY THE VALUE IN CELL B1
DIVIDES THE VALUE IN CELL A1 BY 12
